{"id":8934,"date":"2018-09-25T14:19:51","date_gmt":"2018-09-25T14:19:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.balletx.org\/?p=8934"},"modified":"2020-06-17T20:48:18","modified_gmt":"2020-06-18T00:48:18","slug":"rehearsing-in-the-early-september-heat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.balletx.org\/rehearsing-in-the-early-september-heat\/","title":{"rendered":"The Early September Heat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is an intensity at 1923 Washington Avenue that has nothing to do with the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heat that\u2019s descended on Philadelphia and grips the rest of us in lethargy. While the heat\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">surges outdoors, BalletX dancers sweat inside the new Center for World Premiere\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choreography, working with intense concentration in rehearsal for the upcoming fall\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">season. Shafts of light from the ceiling windows project onto the studio floor and the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dancers move in and out of them, at times marking the movements and other times\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bursting with the same energy and intensity as though performing in front of thousands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The music that pulses through the studio and billows upstairs toward the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">administrative offices as well, is fun, upbeat and has a flare of samba. The men and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women are momentarily split up into two groups, and while laughter cuts through the air,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there is no question to the precision and difficulty of the choreography. In fact, precision\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seems to be the defining word of this choreography, and the dancers at BalletX tackle it\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with concentration, intelligence and poise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On one end of the room, the men stand in a line and drill a series of stationary\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">movements that involve shifting hips and expansive, encircling arms. Each movement is\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exact<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and seemingly so simple, yet every step and inflection of the wrist or head is\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paired with a distinct count. As the men dance and review the choreography, they are\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drawn inward as they learn, focusing intently on the intricacies of the movement. But as\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soon as they finish reviewing together, they exchange jokes and encouragement, taking a\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">physical and mental rest, before refocusing and going at it again. Towards the front of the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">room, closer to the mirrors, Tara Keating rehearses with the women, commanding the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studio space with a gentle authority. Like the men\u2019s, the women\u2019s choreography is\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seemingly simple, but the choreography is so quick and sharp, and the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women count out each of the difficult movement phrases. In addition to its bold and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stunning <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">specificity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the movement is also playful. It is a playfulness that is crossed with\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dignity and purpose, as though, once again, every finger, wrist, elbow and foot holds\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significance and is upheld for viewers to appreciate. The scrutiny that\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the dancers bring to every movement of the choreography is a reminder of how important\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">each step and dancer is in the context of the entire piece.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a short break, Tara switches her attention to the men and turns on the music\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for them to rehearse what they had been drilling at the back before the break. Although\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they step in and out of a line along stage left, some of the men move out into the center of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the studio to dance their solos, shedding their inward focus for energetic and flamboyant\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gestures. They shift from the floor to the air with immense strength before executing\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">multiple turns and pausing at the end with calm control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a short segment that they rehearse, and their dancing is over far too soon\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when they break and take leave for lunch.
