Choreographic Fellowship

Apply to create a world premiere for BalletX’s 2025-2026 Season, under the mentorship of a renowned choreographer.

About The Program

Launched in 2016 with lead support from the Wyncote Foundation, BalletX’s Choreographic Fellowship unites one emerging artist each season with a distinguished choreographer who serves as a mentor as they both create World Premieres on the BalletX dancers. As one of the only programs in the nation that focuses on choreographic development in ballet, the Fellowship strengthens BalletX’s mission by prioritizing the creation of new works by new voices.

  • $7,500 Choreographic Fee to Create a 20-25 Minute Ensemble Ballet
  • Mentorship by a Renowned Choreographer
  • Round-Trip Transportation to Philadelphia, PA, with Per Diem and Accommodations
  • $7,000 Budget for Costumes, Scenic Design, and Music

Eligibility

To be eligible for the BalletX Choreographic Fellowship, choreographers must meet the following requirements:

Be available for the three-week creation period and performance period

Be able to legally work in the United States for the duration of the residency

Have completed your first commission on a professional dance company or University within the past 5 years

Be at least 18 years of age

Choreographic Incubator

Artists that submit to the Choreographic Fellowship will also be considered for BalletX’s Choreographic Incubator program. Incubators have the opportunity to work with the BalletX dancers for one week, allowing the company to learn more about the maker, how they engage and what drives them as choreographers. A stipend, round-trip transportation to Philadelphia, per diem, and accommodations are provided.

Jennifer Archibald

Jennifer Archibald is the founder and director of the Arch Dance Company and ArchCore40 Dance Intensives. Archibald has choreographed for the Ailey II, Atlanta Ballet, Ballet West, Grand Rapids Ballet, Kansas City Ballet, Oregon Ballet Theatre, Pittsburgh Ballet, Sacramento Ballet, Tulsa Ballet, and BalletX among others. She has worked commercially for NIKE, MAC Cosmetics, Tommy Hilfiger, as well as chart-listed artists.

Gary W. Jeter II danced with PHILADANCO!, Eleone Dance Theatre, and Complexions Contemporary Ballet, and BalletX. He has set works for The University of the Arts, Eleone Dance Theatre, Philadelphia Dance Theatre, Dance 2 and Complexions Contemporary Ballet.

Annabelle Lopez Ochoa

Annabelle Lopez Ochoa is an award-winning choreographer that has created works for 70 dance companies around the world such as the Dutch National Ballet, English National Ballet, Hong Kong Ballet, West Australian Ballet, Ballet Nacional de Cuba, San Francisco Ballet, New York City Ballet, Ballet Hispanico, Dance Theater of Harlem, among others. Her wide-ranging body of work includes short conceptual pieces, full-length narrative ballets, and dance films.
